At Silverton our dogs are our hunting partners. There are many
reasons to have a well trained dog for hunting-locating birds in
thick cover, retrieval of wounded birds and companionship are some
of the biggest reasons. Anyone can train a dog as long as they are
patient, take the time to read the dog, and follow logical steps,
ie don't put the cart before the horse.
One of my goals has always been for people to learn to enjoy
their dogs as hunting companions. We offer our dog training
membership which includes 10 chukar and 10 quail to be used
in any combination, June - August. Our upland launchers are also
available for use. Customers that have taken advantage of this
program remark at the difference it made in their hunting season.
Just because a dog is a hunting breed doesn't automatically mean
it's going to go out and perform perfectly the first time out. Good
genes give them the instincts and there is no substitution for that
but the old adage "it takes birds to make a bird dog" is very true.
We also offer our Retriever Training Classes
starting in July and running for 8 weeks. These classes are once a
week, Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday, and will start with basics of
obedience, introduction to retrieving, whistle commands, handling,
birds, guns etc. Everyone has a different idea of what makes a good
hunting dog- we will help you make yours. Training by the month is
also available for those that prefer to turn over the training
duties.
