September 20th Youth Hunter Class Sporting Clays Shoot
NEXT YOUTH SHOOT SEPTEMBER 19TH 2010

September 20th was the date for the 2nd Annual Youth Hunter Class Sporting Clays Shoot at Silverton Sporting Ranch in Canaan. This year there were 21 kids from ages 10-18 participating with the help and support of numerous coaches, parents and grandparents.  The kids got the opportunity to experience clay target shooting on the 5 stand. On the 5 stand clay targets come from overhead, crossers, incomers, outgoers, and rabbits bouncing across the ground.  The participants got a round of 25 targets before moving onto the sporting clays course for 50 targets with similar type presentations. Participants are asked to bring just one box of shells and the rest are supplied by shoot management.   Adults that accompany the kids are encouraged to shoot along with the kids.

The event is sponsored in part by the Maine Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The youth Sporting Clay Shoot held at Silverton Sporting Ranch and the Pine Tree State Junior Rifle Program, youth competitive small bore shoot, are the programs that the Maine Chapter selected to support. According to Ken Betts, RMEF Maine Chapter Chair, “If we don't get our kids involved now there won't be hunting or shooting sports in their future.”

Corey Rowell , Canaan, was the high scorer in the 10-14 age group with a score of 31. In the 15-20 age group Jacob Russell of Bowdoinham broke 41 out of 50 targets to also take the High Over All score for the day. There were many groups represented at the event including the 4-H Shooting Program, a junior Maine guide program, Scholastic Clay Target Program and individuals.

According to Denise Murchison, owner of Silverton Sporting Ranch, the shooting sports offer kids the chance to participate in an activity that is an alternative to traditional athletics that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.  Murchison comments, ”We encourage the adults to get involved by reminding them that someone took them out for their first shooting experience.   It’s hard to tell who enjoys the day more, the kids or the adults because everyone is smiling. “

August 2008 Summers End Shoot

Saturday's shoot started off rainy ( when hasn't it been rainy this summer) but turned out to be a great day. Shooters were a little concerned with the beginning of the course but found it got a little easier as it went along. A last minute rabbit machine breakdown resulted in a fast crosser in it's place and had many shooters shaking their heads. Things improved and we had three scores tied at 86 at the end of the day. After looking at 4 tie breaker stations the HOA honor went to Henry Trial with Mark Brannon taking RU. Andy Kent's 86 resulted in 3rd place honors.
After the main event shooters tested their skills at Long Bird and Tower Triples. Dennis Lopez was the winner of both events. Pentti Pentilla was his partner for the Tower Triples and they walked away with $37.50 each. Dennis also pocketed $47.50 for his Long Bird win. Good shooting Dennis. Tom Demaso won the draw pot amount of $19. Congratulations to all and thanks for attending.
